To enhance feelings of security and reduce energy use and maintenance costs, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities chose a Limelight by Lutron system for its parking facilities lighting upgrade.

The Challenge – Meet specs, overcome limitations.

The selected system had to accommodate low ceiling heights, HVAC ducts, overhead drainpipes, condenser lines, and electrical conduit that restricted fixture surface-mount options.

Featuring low-profile modules and a wireless mesh network, the Limelight system enabled fast, simple, flexible installation.

The Solution – Limelight by Lutron

The Limelight system ensures clear communications between fixtures. Each gateway is capable of controlling 800 luminaires without repeaters.

Sensor modules enable fixtures to be individually addressed and programmed for maximum energy efficiency while still accommodating special events. Fixtures can be assigned to intelligent light groupings, easily support scheduled events, and conserve energy by dimming or shutting off in response to ambient light levels.

“We received 24/7 support from the Lutron Limelight team … enabling us to analyze the data to make appropriate adjustments and … customize alert notifications to help us immediately address any issues that came up,” said Ross Allanson, Director of Parking & Transportation Services (PTS).

The Results – Lower energy use and a flexible control solution

Each facility was programmed to take advantage of dimming, automated daylighting, and customized zone assignments. Overall energy consumption fell by 32%; one facility reported up to 44% lower energy use.

Compared with April 2019, there was a 14% decrease in the University’s kW use in parking facilities in April 2020. As a result of a COVID-19 order, activity in the parking facilities decreased and ­­­the Limelight system automatically operated at lower levels, resulting in energy savings.
